Culture and History

The former Jewish cemetery of Neuwiller-lès-Saverne is considered the oldest Jewish cemetery in Alsace. Hebrew inscriptions on the stones of the fortification wall date from between 1260 and 1550. The site has been listed as a Monument historique since 10 February 1999.

The Saints-Pierre-et-Paul Abbey Church preserves several features of artistic and ecclesiastical historical significance. The tapestries of Saint Adalbert were made at the beginning of the 15th century. They consist of four tapestries that are 20 metres long in total and depict 165 figures. The abbey church also contains a 12th-century baptismal font, an 18th-century reliquary tomb of Saint Adalbert, the Holy Sepulchre dating from 1478, and four polychrome wooden statues from the 15th century.

Architecturally, the Saints-Pierre-et-Paul Abbey Church in Neuwiller-lès-Saverne combines Romanesque, transitional Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles; its construction phases span from the 9th to the 19th century. The Saint-Adelphe Church in Neuwiller-lès-Saverne is a late Romanesque building, erected mainly at the beginning of the 13th century to house the relics of Saint Adalbert and serve simultaneously as a parish and pilgrimage church.

The former synagogue is a stop on the audio tour of Neuwiller-lès-Saverne, which also explores the rural Judaism formerly widespread in Alsace. Saint-Adelphe Church is open daily from 1 April to 31 December: from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. in summer and until 5 p.m. in winter.
