Neubois is located on the Schlossberg, which dominates the entrance to the Villé and Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines valleys above the village. Château du Frankenbourg dates back to the 12th century. Its ruins include walls measuring between 6 and 10 metres in height, as well as an 11-metre-high keep with a visible brick vault. The protohistoric enclosure surrounds the castle on three sides and is 1.80 metres thick. On 6 December 1896, Château du Frankenbourg was designated in its entirety as a historic monument; its protohistoric enclosure received this status on 10 September 1990. Another protohistoric wall runs along the cone of the Schlossberg massif above Neubois.
The circular trail to Château du Frankenbourg offers views of the Villé Valley, the Val d’Argent, Sélestat and the Alsatian plain. Since a municipal order dated 30 April 2025, access to the trail leading to the entrance of Château du Frankenbourg and to the keep’s platform has been prohibited to the public until further notice.
Culture
The Église Saint Materne houses the valley’s only Callinet organ and one of the few in Bas-Rhin. Its instrumental section was added to the register of historic monuments in 1978. The church also has eight stained-glass windows made in 1906 by the Ott workshop in Strasbourg.
Walking Tours
The Balade ludique à Neubois is a village tour featuring puzzles and the collection of clues. Three versions are aimed at children aged 4 to 12 and families. The tour is 2.4 kilometres long, takes 2.5 hours, is suitable for all audiences and starts at Neubois Town Hall.
Pilgrimage
In the immediate vicinity of Neubois, a chapel, a large cross and a Stations of the Cross with twelve stations are located in the clearing where the apparition took place. Devotion to the Virgin Mary in Neubois continues to attract pilgrims from the surrounding area and from further afield. About two kilometres from Neubois, a renovated forest chapel near the “Mudergottes Brennela” spring reminds walkers and pilgrims of the local apparition tradition.
