Mittelbergheim is situated amid vineyards on the southern slope of a hill in the center of Alsace, at an altitude of 210 m. The Alsace Wine Route runs through the village. The Zotzenberg Grand Cru was first mentioned as early as 1372.

History

Mittelbergheim has preserved historic houses that bear witness to a flourishing Renaissance in winegrowing. The village’s Renaissance winegrowers’ houses have stone façades and ornaments carved from Vosges sandstone. The former town hall also has stone façades and ornaments carved from Vosges sandstone.

The tradition of the wine price register, the “Weinschlagbuch,” dates back to the 15th century and continues to this day. The “Mémoire de Vignerons” wine museum documents traditional practices and inherited expertise. Mittelbergheim’s oil mill has also been fully preserved and remains operational.

Wine and Sightseeing

Domaine Gilg offers tours of its 16th-century cellars, stories from winegrowers, and guided tastings of its finest wines. At the Domaine Armand Gilg winery, the 16th-century cellars can be visited independently as part of a tour outside the grape harvest season. Visitors can taste wine in the Domaine Armand Gilg tasting cellar.

Depending on availability, guided tours of Mittelbergheim and its wine museum may include a cellar visit with a wine tasting at a winegrower’s estate.

Nature

The wine trail offers panoramic views of Mittelbergheim. Along the wine trail, artist-created information boards provide information about the seven Alsatian grape varieties. The Sentier viticole de Mittelbergheim – Le Zotzenberg wine trail begins at the Zotzenberg parking lot.

Traditions

At the Bredelmarik, Mittelbergheim’s Advent market, visitors can discover more than 30 varieties of Alsatian Christmas cookies. A cookie-making workshop passes on the corresponding traditional knowledge to children.
