The municipality of Hilsenheim is part of the Natura 2000 site FR4201797 “Secteur alluvial Rhin-Ried-Bruch, Bas-Rhin” under the Habitats Directive. It is also part of the Natura 2000 site FR4212813 “Ried de Colmar à Sélestat, Bas-Rhin” under the Birds Directive. The Zembs-Langweggraben-Hilsenheim wetland of notable ecological importance is located within the municipality of Hilsenheim. The Ried meadows around Hilsenheim are home to animal and plant life of great importance for nature conservation.

Culture

The parish church of Saint Martin was destroyed by bombing during the fighting in December 1944 and rebuilt from 1954 to 1958. It has an octagonal onion dome with flat lead tiles, as well as a broad transept whose arms are extended into two small, low chapels.

The farmhouse dwelling at 59 Rue Principale, built entirely in half-timbering, was constructed in 1759. An agricultural school was established at the Willerhof estate from 1845 onward for 200 orphans from the region. The Willerhof chapel has round-arched windows with sandstone surrounds.

Two dilapidated bunkers of the Maginot Line are visible within the municipality of Hilsenheim. The present-day rural road Heidenstraessel (“small road of the heathens”) corresponds to the former Roman consular road that connected Basel with Strasbourg.
