Culture and History
In Graufthal, the Maisons des Rochers were gradually converted from the abbey’s storage rooms into residential houses. They allow visitors to learn about the living conditions of their former inhabitants. The houses also host the exhibition “Des rochers et des hommes”, which explores how people used the rocks over the centuries.
Graufthal Abbey was a Benedictine nunnery documented from the 12th to the 16th century. The first level of its refectory has survived almost in its entirety and is therefore considered unique in Alsace. The remains of the abbey also include a large arcaded hall, probably used as a refectory, which was built in the third quarter of the 12th century.
The troglodytic houses of Graufthal are located in two horizontal rock crevices; the residential houses in the first crevice are about 7 metres above the village. The structural elements of the Maisons troglodytiques de Graufthal were listed as historic monuments by a decree dated 20 December 1988.
