Erstein: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Erstein showcases its history through a diverse combination of industrial heritage, art, sacred architecture and protected nature. Particularly illustrative is the Cité Ouvrière dite "Neye Hisle": it was built between 1884 and 1896 as an ensemble of 17 semi-detached houses constructed according to the same plan for employees of the Filature de Laine Peignée. The original façades and roofs of the workers’ houses, the associated sheds, as well as preserved wells, ditches, enclosures and gardens have been protected by registration under a decree dated 17 February 2014.

History

The present-day Saint Martin d’Erstein church is part of the town’s sacred history. It was built in 1859 according to plans by the architect Antoine Ringeisen, after the former place of worship had been destroyed.

The historical tour of Erstein’s industrial heritage is centred around the Filature de Laine Peignée, whose history began in 1855. Another historical tour through Erstein’s town centre leads past remarkable buildings and sites.

The Etappenstall has a permanent archaeological area featuring an exceptionally well-preserved Bronze Age well and finds from a Merovingian necropolis.

Culture

The Musée Würth France Erstein presents temporary exhibitions from the Würth Collection throughout the year. This collection encompasses all artistic movements from the late 19th century to the present day. The Musée Würth also offers guided tours, workshops for different age groups and a diverse cultural programme. The Musée Würth can be reached via the Strasbourg–Basel TER line, which stops in Erstein.

The themes at the Etappenstall also change: it presents temporary exhibitions on local heritage, artistic disciplines and social issues with interactive displays.

Nature and Trails

The Circuits des trois forêts are year-round hiking routes open to everyone through the town and the forest of Erstein. They are 6, 12 and 20 km long and are considered routes without particular difficulties.

The Forêt d’Erstein nature reserve is home to almost 300 plant species, 29 vertebrate species, 44 species of butterflies and dragonflies, and 78 bird species.
