Culture and history
Diemeringen’s historical heritage includes the present-day synagogue. It was built in 1867 according to plans by the architect Louis Furst, who came from Saverne.
The Protestant church of Diemeringen, including its gallery with paintings and the paneling of the north wall with pulpit, has been protected by an ordinance dated December 30, 1985.
The medieval fortifications of Diemeringen are said to have comprised thirteen defensive towers and three gates. Today, only a round tower and two adjoining sections of the surrounding wall remain visible.
Construction of the former Jewish school in Diemeringen began in 1853 and was completed in 1862 due to insufficient funds. The building contains the teacher’s apartment and a mikveh; its floor and staircase are clad with large sandstone slabs.
The former rectory in Diemeringen is a manor house built by the co-lords of Diemeringen, the Counts of Rhine of Dhann. The sandstone doorway bears the year 1730.
The Jewish cemetery contains elaborately designed gravestones with symbolic motifs, including the blessing hands of the Cohanim and a jug of the Levites.
Diemeringen’s pottery history included pottery production from the mid-17th century onward, encouraged by and connected with the clay found in the soil. The La Grande Poterie Alsacienne factory was also founded in 1924.
Landscape and activities
The Rives de l’Eichel nature area in Diemeringen features fallow land and a strip of riparian woodland. One of its special features is the Eichel watercourse. The nature area is home to 65 plant species and 65 animal species.
Diemeringen also has a 2 km-long Parcours de santé, a fitness trail in the forest with strength and endurance exercises.
