Culture
The Musée et Maison du patrimoine displays archaeological finds, collections of old documents and a model of Benfeld as it looked in 1631. Admission is free; visitors can explore the museum independently, while guided tours for groups are available by prior arrangement.
A striking feature of the town hall is the Jacquemart clock dating from 1620. It comprises three automata carved from oak: Prudentia, la Mort and Justitia. Benfeld Town Hall with its Jacquemart can be visited during the season by reservation as part of a guided tour.
The synagogue on Rue de la Dîme was first built in 1845 and expanded in 1875 with two side galleries. It is decorated with frescoes by the artist Achille Metzger dating from 1922 and was the only synagogue in Alsace not desecrated by the National Socialists.
Nature
The Allée des Platanes begins in Benfeld near Rue de la Digue and stretches along the Muhlbach, a branch of the Ill, as far as Huttenheim. It is lined with 49 plane trees planted more than 200 years ago. In June 2017, the avenue was awarded the “Arbres Remarquables” label by the ARBRES association.
The banks of the Ill in Benfeld are suitable for family walks and moments of relaxation. The significance of the Ill, the largest river in Alsace, is explained along the Circuit de l’Ill; three structures can be observed along the circular route.
Water
Benfeld’s lake has a landscaped sandy beach, a table tennis table, a volleyball court and changing facilities. Swimming is supervised in the beach area from mid-June to the end of August.
Getting There
Benfeld is located on the RD1083 and on a railway line, giving it excellent road and rail connections.
