Sindal is known for its water art throughout the town. There are also historic buildings, seasonal art offerings and opportunities for outdoor activities. Families who enjoy talking with their children about art, architectural history and a memorial will find a range of themes to shape their travel plans around.

Water art as a connecting theme

The official sculpture route through Sindal leads to a selection of the town’s sculptures. More than 100 works were created as part of the water art project, including fountains and water art. So the theme encompasses more than individual fountains: it also includes various works of art related to Sindal.

The water art by Niels Christian Bach at Sindal’s northern entrance is part of the “100 springvand” project. Its form symbolises Sindal’s location in Soldalen, in the heart of Vendsyssel. Another work is “Vandtrappe”: this ceramic water feature rises on a small hill in the middle of town.

The motifs also vary. The water sculpture “Klippen og Staven” presents a modern version of the story of Moses, who brought water from a rock with his staff. For “De fem hermer”, the plan was to use bricks made from Sindal’s own soil. This planned choice of material adds a connection to the local ground to the religious imagery.

Church, mill and remembrance

The oldest parts of Sindal Gl. Kirke date back to the 12th century. Its furnishings include a Romanesque granite baptismal font. Sindal Mill is Sindal’s oldest industrial building. It is a Dutch-style stone-walled windmill that was operated with two millstones and a roller mill. The church and mill therefore represent different aspects of local history: early church architecture and the commercial use of a mill.

Another historical theme is reflected in the memorial “Tak til Sindal fra Israel”. Created in 1977, it commemorates Denmark’s efforts on behalf of the Jews during the Second World War. For visitors interested in history, it offers a different perspective from the church’s architecture or the mill’s industrial past.

Summer art and outdoor activities

In summer, Gøgsigs Pakhus offers open studios, an art school and art exhibitions. This seasonal offering provides a different focus from the sculptures around town: here, you encounter art through studios and exhibitions. So if you want culture to shape your trip, it is worth considering both the art trail and the time of year when planning.

The nearby Tolne Nature Park adds a natural landscape to the mix. There are marked hiking trails in Tolne Skov, and the nature park also offers cycling and horse-riding routes. A canoe trip on the Uggerby Å starts at Sindal Marina and ends in Bindslev. With its set start and end points, it offers a different focus from a day devoted to Sindal’s works of art and buildings.

The Tannistesten also takes place at a clearly defined time: every year, for one week in September, it uses the runway at Sindal Lufthavn to test vehicles’ evasive manoeuvres and safety systems. Exact dates may vary from year to year. If this week matters for your stay, check the specific dates when planning your trip.

Which base suits your plans?

When choosing where to stay, it helps to weigh up the different options: culture and architectural history in town, trails in the nearby nature park, or a canoe trip with a set start and finish. First consider what kind of days you would like to spend, then look for a suitable holiday rental. That way, your choice of location reflects your travel plans without requiring every experience to follow the same itinerary.
