Hjørring Municipality combines distinctive coastal landscapes, protected natural areas, and historic and artistic sites. One of the municipality’s best-known protected areas is Rubjerg Knude. Tolne Nature Park, Denmark’s northernmost nature park, offers impressive views of Skagens Odde.

Nature

Tolne Nature Park offers marked hiking trails and opportunities to explore the diverse natural surroundings by bicycle or on horseback. The Tolneruten route also passes through the park as one of two regional cycling routes. Slotved Skov and Slotved Dyrehave feature forests, diverse flora and fauna, small lakes, birds and deer.

Tornby Klitplantage encompasses coniferous and deciduous forests, scrubland, dunes, dune heath, beach, ravines, hills, agricultural land, reed beds, dune lakes and waterways. Four marked hiking trails are available there. When protected areas are designated in Hjørring Municipality, trail systems and public access may also be established.

Hjørring Municipality provides visitors with information about hiking trails, cycling routes, Kløverstier routes and boating areas. In addition to routes through forests, dunes and heathland, different forms of transport are therefore also a focus.

Water

The Uggerby Å is navigable for 50 kilometres from Ilbro to the sea in Hjørring Municipality. Non-motorised boats, including rowing boats, kayaks and canoes, may be used on this river year-round from 7:00 a.m. until sunset. The boats must be visibly marked at the bow with a registration number.

Culture

In the Middle Ages, Børglum Monastery was the seat of the Diocese of Vendsyssel and the northern principal monastery of the European Premonstratensian Order. Today, the monastery displays a full-size, 1:1 embroidered copy of the Bayeux Tapestry. The historic herb garden explains medieval medicinal herbs using QR codes at the beds and short information videos.

The collection of Vendsyssel Art Museum focuses on artists with links to Vendsyssel. It includes painting, sculpture, crafts and graphic art from around 1945 to the present day. The museum offers guided tours of temporary exhibitions and permanent collections, as well as sculpture walks in the urban area.

Vendsyssel Historical Museum also reaches far back in time: it presents the history and objects of humanity from the earliest times to the present day. Sct. Hans Kirke dates from the decades around 1200. Inside is an Early Gothic fresco of Saint Christopher carrying the Christ Child.

City and Art

Hjørring’s old town comprises half-timbered houses, alleyways, cobblestone streets and three medieval churches. Købmand Riis’ Gård is one of only two surviving half-timbered houses in Hjørring. Hjørring’s Old Town Hall, built from 1831 to 1834, stands at Axeltorv.

Tornby Gamle Købmandsgaard houses an exhibition about the region and the era of coastal shipping trade.

Catharinæ Kirke has a Romanesque baptismal font made of limestone from Gotland. It also preserves the original medieval church, part of which now forms the transept of the existing church building. At Det Grafiske Værksted in Hjørring, visitors can experience original art prints and gain insight into the creative process of printmaking.

Hjørring’s sculpture guide lists more than 250 works spanning around 150 years of sculpture. The works are installed throughout the urban area and can be viewed at any time. Another recurring event is the Dana Cup Hjørring, held every year in calendar week 30, which brings more than 1,000 teams and up to 25,000 visitors from around 50 countries to Hjørring Municipality.

Getting Around

Tornby Klitplantage is considered accessible on foot from Tornby railway station. The station is served by local railway line 76 from Hjørring towards Hirtshals; Hjørring is also connected by regional train 3235 from Aalborg. Slotved Skov can be reached from both towns via a cycle path. It is also possible to take the train to Sindal railway station, from where it is approximately 2 kilometres to the edge of the area.
