Nørre Rubjerg – Rubjerg Knude, Lighthouse and Dune Landscape

Nørre Rubjerg is an exciting starting point if you would like to combine landscape, activity and regional history. In the surrounding area, Rubjerg Knude, the lighthouse and the eventful history of the old parish shape the experiences. There are also paths through sand and dunes, distinctive plant life, and bird migration in spring and autumn. This allows you to shape your trip around active hours outdoors and cultural discoveries.

Rubjerg Knude and the landscape

Rubjerg Knude forms the high point of the coastal cliff stretch between Lønstrup and Nørre Rubjerg. The highest part is just under 100 metres above sea level. Another characteristic feature is the approximately 40-metre-thick layer of wind-blown sand in the upper section, which continues to grow. The sand is therefore not merely a backdrop, but defines the landscape and also the way in which you explore the area.

In spring and autumn, bird migration in the area around Nørre Rubjerg becomes an attraction in its own right. Those who enjoy incorporating nature observation into their daily plans will consequently find a seasonally changing perspective on the landscape. In the Rubjerg Klit plantation, the conditions provide a habitat for at least seven orchid species.

Paths for different daily plans

One suggested hike is 4–5 kilometres long and can be strenuous because of the sand. It starts at the car park by the lighthouse and follows the dune ridge southwards. Along the way, you also reach the old churchyard of Rubjerg. The return route follows the North Sea Trail through the Rubjerg Klit plantation back to the car park by the lighthouse. Take the route length and the sandy surface into account when planning your day.

Near Grønne Rende, another suggested route leads inland through the sea buckthorn area and is described as a wheelchair-accessible path. This complements the longer hike with another way to experience the surroundings. Cyclists can also include a specific landmark in their plans: the Vestkyst Cycle Route runs directly through the Rubjerg Knude area.

The lighthouse and the history of Rubjerg

At Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse, an interior staircase allows you to climb to the top of the lighthouse. There is also a 14 m² exhibition container at the car park. It provides an overview of Rubjerg Knude and the history of the lighthouse – from the formation of the landscape by Ice Age glaciers and its construction in 1900 to its spectacular relocation 70 metres inland.

The old churchyard of Rubjerg also offers a historical perspective on the area. It preserves the remains of a demolished medieval church and funerary monuments. After several centuries of drifting sand, the old church was demolished in 1904 and moved several kilometres inland. The new church of Rubjerg was built from materials from the old church; its Romanesque baptismal font was also reused.
