Assendrup combines a distinctive village structure with a characteristic landscape and impressive stones. The area is designated a national geological site of interest. A small erosion valley shapes the low-lying terrain; at the same time, the watercourse, road and settlement pattern give the village its own character. Assendrup therefore offers several concrete points of interest to help you plan your trip: village history, nature and cycling.

Landscape and Village Structure

The landscape around Assendrup is topographically distinctive. The Brandteich in the Forte remains visible as a protected watercourse and runs parallel to the main road. The combination of the erosion valley, watercourse and road can be seen in specific features of the village, rather than appearing merely as a generic landscape backdrop.

Assendrup is classified both as a street-fort village (vejforteby) and as a Forte village (fortelandsby). One section of the road has been widened into a street square known as the Forte. The village structure is still recognizable, as the settlement is now roughly the same size as it was in the 19th century. This creates a village scene in which the settlement pattern itself becomes a subject of interest: the terms, the street square and the visible watercourse are different aspects of the same village fabric.

Stones with a Story of Their Own

The Assendrupstenen is the longest known stone in East Jutland. It is almost six metres long and, according to the best estimate, weighs 80 tonnes. It came to light in 1938, when gravel was being extracted at this site. Its measurements and discovery history offer two different points of interest: the stone is a geological landmark and is also linked to a specific moment in the village’s history.

Another striking stone, the Troldesten, lies one kilometre west of Assendrup and 100 metres south of Ørredevej. According to local legend, a troll hurled it from Fruering Church towards Vedslet Church. The two stones therefore foreground different stories: the Assendrupstenen is notable for its size and the year it was discovered, while the Troldesten is the subject of a traditional tale. Those interested in nature and cultural history will find this contrast a distinctive way to explore the surrounding area.

The Overdrev, site 176, is also located in the Vedslet–Assendrup area, in dry, hilly terrain with exposed stones and many anthills. These landscape features add another tangible impression of the surroundings to the picture formed by the small erosion valley and striking stones.

Cycling Around Assendrup

Cycle Route 7 towards Hov Havn passes through Assendrup. Another point of reference is Kulturringen, a 540-kilometre cycling route featuring cultural and natural experiences in East Jutland. Kulturringen’s Route 5 runs from Torrild to Alken; a short detour takes you around Assendrup. The two routes offer different ways to orient yourself: Route 7 runs through the village towards Hov Havn, while Route 5 includes Assendrup on a short detour along the section between Torrild and Alken. You can choose between them according to the kind of cycling trip you have in mind.

Local Connections and Choosing Accommodation

Assendrup Gårdbutik is located in the village of Assendrup, near Hovedgård and a little north of Horsens. Its range includes beef, lamb, veal, eggs, smoked goods and ice cream. It is a practical point of interest for travellers who would like to include a farm shop in their experience of the area.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Assendrup, consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: the village structure and its history, the stones and the legend, or the cycling routes. For a stay focused on the village itself, the Forte and the stones take centre stage; if cycling routes shape your travel plans, Route 7 and Kulturringen are useful points of reference. This way, you can choose Assendrup according to which of these aspects is most interesting for your trip.
