Discover Korning: Nature Trail and Village History

Korning combines a varied river landscape with a remarkable village history. Between the Gesager Å, forests and fields, you can discover a 1.5 km-long nature trail, traces of former crafts and a historic village environment around Korning Kirke. This makes the area suitable for planning a trip in which nature experiences and cultural discoveries each have their own place.

Nature along the Gesager Å and the river courses

The Gesager Å has cut through the moraine landscape, creating slopes 10 to 15 metres high. It runs north and west of Korning and thus shapes the landscape around the village. The Bygholm Å is also part of the surroundings: it runs west of Korning towards Klaks Mølle.

The Korning Nature Trail begins at Korning Kro and leads as a circular route through the area by the Gesager Å. The 1.5 km-long path lies immediately southwest of Korning and is designated as a walking path. For your day planning, it is important to note that the nature trail may be temporarily closed due to hunting. If you are looking for a specific nature sight, you can see the remains of the weir in the river south of the old bridge from Sporet i Korning.

In the area by the river west of Korning, there is also a nature trail, shelters and a fire pit. The nature around Korning is used for walks, cycling and other outdoor activities. For anglers, the fishing rights of Horsens og Omegns Sportsfiskerforening in the vicinity of the village are significant: They extend from a few kilometres upstream of Korning Bro to Lovbyvej shortly before the river flows into Bygholm Sø. Some sections are located along both banks, while others are only along one bank.

Village history around Korning Kirke

The historic village environment of Korning lies around Korning Kirke and the gently curving village road Korning Gammelby. The area around the church is designated as a cultural heritage environment because of its connection to De Stærke Jyder. There has been a school in Korning since around 1740. A memorial stone near Korning Kirke marks the former site of the smithy. Hans Nielsen Smed, one of the founders of De Stærke Jyder, had his roots there.

Korning Kro also tells the story of the village’s development. The present building at Korningvej 143 was constructed in 1904. It was initially used as a meeting house, later as a temperance hotel and, from 1968, as a kro. Another notable place is the village pond in Korning. It was extensively renovated and revived as a meeting place and space for conversation for the village’s residents. During the renovation, the distinctive cultural heritage environment around the village pond in Korning Gammelby was preserved.

If you would like to explore the regional history in greater depth, Korning Lokalhistoriske Forening organises excursions and themed days offering insights into the history of the region. Korning also has a story trail that connects the history of the village with the nature around Korning. A village festival organised by the Borgerforening in week 23 adds a communal occasion to these place-specific impressions.
