Slude between Sømose and Slude Strand

Slude combines a distinctive landscape with an unusually rich history. Near Sludegård, Sludegårds Sømose expands to almost 300 metres in width. There is also Slude Strand, a narrow beach where you can collect stones.

Sømose and traces of a long history

Sludegårds Sømose is notable not only for its landscape. In 1946, a human skull and a worked piece of wood, presumably the handle of an axe, were found there during peat extraction. The archaeological finds also include clay vessels, wooden and flint tools, as well as the remains of animals and humans. Offerings were repeatedly made in the Sømose over a period of 2,000 years. These finds give the moorland a cultural dimension that goes beyond a purely scenic impression.

The history of the area can also be traced through specific dates. Slude is first mentioned in written sources in 1323 under the name “Sluthæ”. On an early land consolidation map from 1810, Slude is shown as a village with three farms, as well as Sludegård. The station in Slude also served as a base for processing mail and dispatching goods directly throughout the country. The name “Slude” may refer to the surrounding hilly landscape and could be understood as meaning “lean forward” or “bend”.

Hiking, cycling and the coast

For active days on holiday, the section of the E6 long-distance hiking trail from Hesselagergård to Nyborg is an appealing option. It passes Slude Strand; the same section follows the marked Cycle Route 50. This allows you to plan your trip around different means of getting around without losing sight of the area's historical and scenic qualities. The coastal strategy route F2.02.02 begins at Slude Strand and ends at the boundary with section F2.03 near Kløverhage. It is 2.6 km long and lies within Nyborg Municipality.

At Slude Strand, the focus is on a direct experience of nature: The narrow beach invites you to collect stones and take in the coastal landscape attentively. For families with different interests, this can be a good complement to a day of hiking or an outing on Cycle Route 50. Those who prefer to explore historical questions can combine the landscape of Sømose with the finds and the development of the village. This creates no fixed itinerary, but rather a trip with various possible focal points.

If the E6, Cycle Route 50 or the coastal strategy route is the main focus, your planning should take the relevant trail section and its starting point into account. If, on the other hand, you would like to allow more time for the landscape and local history, you can consider Slude as a thematic base for more leisurely holiday days. A holiday apartment or holiday house is particularly suitable if you do not want to limit your trip to a single activity, but would rather alternate between the beach, trails and historical discoveries.
