Nyborg Municipality: History by the Water and Routes for Many Days of Holiday

Nyborg Castle was built around 1200 by Valdemar Sejr. Erik Klipping signed Denmark’s first constitution at Nyborg Castle in 1282. Nyborg Castle remains closed to the public during the ongoing restoration. However, free guided walks with volunteer guides explore Nyborg’s old royal castle.

The Nyborg fortifications, registered as a protected monument in 1918, include the castle island with its buildings, the castle lake and the ramparts. The Danehof offers another historical perspective: Every year, Nyborg Municipality and Østfyns Museer bring the medieval Danehof back to life in Nyborg over a summer weekend; the tradition dates back more than 800 years.

Borgmestergården is a merchant’s courtyard dating from 1601 and now houses Nyborg’s city museum. Its local history collection includes an exhibition about the Lerche family, an alchemist’s room, an activity with quill and ink, and an old blacksmith’s workshop. Nyborg School Museum houses one of Denmark’s largest collections relating to the old schools in Nyborg and the surrounding area.

The coast is the second major focus. Nyborg has more than 45 km of coastline, and there are also four beaches in total with Blue Flag certification. Fyns Badestrand is considered Funen’s widest sandy beach. Kongshøj Strand has a bathing jetty, a kiosk, parking facilities and Blue Flag certification.

Various distances are available for walks and hikes. In Nyborg and on East Funen, there are routes from 0 to 5 km, many of which combine nature and historical sites. Nyborg has a total of four different Kløverstier routes. The green Kløversti is 2.7 km long and runs through Nyborg’s historic town centre as well as the medieval royal and residential town. The black Kløversti is approximately 33.5 km long and runs through coastal areas, villages and the landscape around Nyborg.

Nyborg’s cycling routes pass through coastal landscapes, forests and the small-town atmosphere of a merchant town. Nyborg can be reached by bicycle via national cycle route no. 8 and route 6 across Funen. In the waters of the Great Belt near Nyborg, diving is one of the available water sports activities.

At Nyborg Distillery, visitors can see copper stills and whisky barrels and learn more about the production of organic whisky, gin and rum.
