Hjorte can be explored through a range of travel interests: the place is documented in 1396 under the historical form “Hiorvit”; nearby Tanderup Church offers a connection to medieval architectural history, while Brænde Ådal, with its marked hiking trails, is a destination for nature lovers. If you are looking for a holiday rental, consider which experiences you want to shape your stay before choosing. Local history, church music and trails through the river valley offer different ways to explore.

Brænde Ådal: hiking trails, streams and mill ponds

Brende Mølle is an area of historical and scenic interest, as well as a starting point for tours through Brænde Ådal. There are marked hiking trails in the valley; parking is available at Skovbrynet and Brende Mølle. At Klakkebjerg, there is a shelter with a fire pit for basic overnight stays. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between marked trails, the parking options mentioned and a basic overnight stay in the shelter.

There is a network of paths around the mill ponds at Brende Mølle. Small streams that branch off from Brende Å add to the area; you can follow the river valley as far as the road to Assens. For route planning, you can choose between paths around ponds and streams and a route along the river valley. Cycle Route 71 passes through the Brænde Ådal area. Gelsted has a train connection.

Tanderup Church and Hjorte’s history

Nearby Tanderup Church is a medieval church dating from around 1200; its baptismal font dates from around 1100. Concerts and other music events are held there occasionally. As ceremonies, holidays and other closures can affect opening hours, check before visiting. Possible concert dates may provide an additional reason to plan your trip.

Hjorte Holme Skov is another historical point of reference: in the late 19th century, the forest was described as easily accessible, close to the road to Assens and for visitors from surrounding parishes. On 21 June 1891, a festival was held there in aid of Tanderup Parish’s sickness insurance association. This dated event offers a specific glimpse into local history at the time.

Another connection to church history concerns the location of Tanderup Church. The Tanderup Church Council stated that it was willing to have an area in Hjorte By, 100 metres from the cemetery wall, protected in order to preserve the open setting of Tanderup Church.

Brænde Ådal was also the subject of a landscape protection proposal: on 29 January 2026, Danmarks Naturfredningsforening submitted a proposal to the Nature Conservation Board for Funen to protect the valley in the municipalities of Assens and Middelfart. It covers 280 hectares. This is a proposal, not an approved protection measure.

Choose a holiday rental to suit your plans

When looking for a holiday rental in Hjorte, it helps to weigh up your interests: are marked trails and the landscape of Brænde Ådal your main focus, or would you prefer to concentrate on Tanderup Church, music events and local history? A focus on nature offers different discoveries from a focus on culture. If visiting the church or attending a concert is important, check opening hours or possible event dates in advance.
