Marstal Church was built in 1738. Seven church models inside the church tell the story of the development of seafaring from the 18th to the 20th century and the town’s connection to the sea. There is also a carillon with 48 bells. The Marstal Motor Factory is another part of the local history; it was founded in 1934. The Motorsamlingen can be visited on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 to 12:00.

Marstal’s maritime history is evident not only in individual buildings. It can be seen and experienced throughout the town and along the harbour. The town plan is oriented towards the sea: the streets and paths known as Snorrer lead from the main street to the harbour and the sea. At the harbour, a partially ribbed schooner structure designed as a sculpture on Eriksens Plads commemorates the extensive shipyard activity that shaped the town. Eriksens Plads is also considered one of the cradles of wooden shipbuilding.

Anyone wishing to explore the history of seafaring in greater depth can visit the exhibitions at Marstal Søfartsmuseum with a free local guided tour. The harbour is protected by a 1 km-long stone breakwater, which sailors built voluntarily over several decades from 1825 onwards. In July, 50 to 60 preserved sailing ships visit Marstal as part of Fyn Rundt.

Routes, bathing huts and experiences with children

For an active day out, hiking trails belonging to the Øhavsstien lead through the forest in Toftegårdsskoven and offer views over fields of grain. Another option is the route from Marstal to Ærøskøbing: it begins at Marstal Harbour, runs along the edge of the town and offers views along Strandvejen. The Kyststien on Ærø is a 30 km-long hiking route. This allows you to choose between a route with a described starting point, course and views, and the 30 km-long Kyststien on Ærø.

On the outskirts of the town lies Egehovedskoven by the beach at Eriks Hale. The colourful bathing huts on the sandbar outside Marstal are considered a timeless part of Ærø’s cultural heritage. On the side of Eriks Hale known as Det Lille Hav, you can swim in a shallow, calm and warm bay. Families gather at the bathing huts for Midsummer’s Eve, to cook Easter eggs and to bathe in the sun.

Marstal Marina is the largest marina on Ærø and is within comfortable walking distance of the town centre and Eriks Hale. It has a playground, barbecue shelters, as well as toilet and bathing facilities. The maritime playground has two large maritime play areas. At the floating landing stage, children and adults can catch crabs with a net. For families, this makes it possible to complement a day of culture with an experience by the water.
