Culture and History

The Pilgrimage Church of St. John of Nepomuk on Zelená hora was completed and consecrated in 1722. The historic landscape around the Cistercian monastery of Žďár bears the European Heritage Label.
Nature and Landscape
The Vysočina Region stretches along the gently rolling ridges of the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands in the center of the Czech Republic. The Žďárské vrchy are the source area of the Sázava, Svratka, Oslava, Chrudimka, and Doubrava rivers.
The Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area covers 709 square kilometers; almost half of its area is covered by forests. Devět skal is the highest mountain in the protected landscape area. Rural settlements with elements of Horácko folk architecture have been preserved in the landscape.
Dům přírody Žďárských vrchů presents the landscape through various historical periods. It also features maps with hiking and cycling trails as well as tourist destinations for further tours. Four educational trails explore the Žďárské vrchy: Babín, Dářko, Žáková Hora–Tiskůvka, and Krajem Chrudimky.
Getting Around
The D1 motorway crosses the region and is described as one reason why Vysočina is easily accessible.
The Gravel UNESCO Tour combines gravel and forest tracks, field sections, and lightly trafficked roads. It passes through the forests of Javořice, to Roštejn Castle, Jihlava, Žďár nad Sázavou, Třebíč, and Nová Říše.
The Vysočina Arena area offers mountain biking trails ranging from child-friendly and wheelchair-accessible natural paths to challenging single tracks, as well as a paved pump track. Novoměstsko is described as an area with good conditions for cross-country skiing; the Vysočina Arena is said to offer conditions for World Cup events in cross-country skiing, biathlon, and mountain biking.
