Znojmo District: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Wine and regional culture

The Painted Cellar in Šatov contains relief-like fantasy paintings by local artist Maxmillian Appeltauer. Šobes Vineyard lies in a bend of the Dyje River within Podyjí and offers seasonal wine tastings. In Vrbovec, the Hroznové kozy educational trail is an easy circular route suitable for families, introducing visitors to wine traditions and local legends.

Culture and history

Bítov Castle stands on a narrow rocky spur approximately 70 metres above the Želetavka. The visitor tour includes a Neo-Gothic chapel with the Bítov Madonna, dated 1334, as well as an animal park, including the restored zoo associated with Baron Jiří Haas. Znojemské podzemí offers atmospheric tours through medieval passageways, cellars and shelters beneath Znojmo’s historic centre. One route includes a Jesuit aqueduct, large underground halls, shafts, and exhibitions on archaeology and viticulture. Another route leads to a medieval well, original passages carved into the rock, and an exhibition on the history of the underground.

The Čížov Iron Curtain Memorial covers significant historical periods and moments in 20th-century Czech history. The water mill in Slup has four functioning water wheels and a millrace, and explains the history of milling from prehistoric times to the present day.

Nature and landscape

Podyjí lies at the transition between the Hercynian and Pannonian biogeographical regions. The area contains extensive oak-hornbeam forests as well as scree forests and thermophilous oak forests. Podyjí National Park lies on the Austrian border, where it is connected to Thayatal National Park. It preserves an exceptionally well-preserved river valley in a densely forested landscape. In Podyjí, the Dyje winds past rocks, vineyards, flower-rich meadows and sunny orchards.

Marked hiking trails in Podyjí offer opportunities to observe rare plants and animals. Hikes may provide opportunities to observe rare butterflies on the Fládnitzké Moor and bats at the ruins of Nový Hradek. The nature trails in Podyjí include an ascent to Vraní skála. Podyjí has more than 20 viewpoints, including Sealsfieldův kámen above a bend in the river.

On the way

Loucký Monastery is the starting point for the Znojmo tourist train, which connects Louka with the historic centre of Znojmo. The Znojmo–Chvalovice cycle path connects Znojmo with Nový Šaldorf, Vrbovec and Chvalovice. It offers a route away from a busy road towards the Austrian border.
