Prague Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and consists of an extensive complex of palaces and religious buildings in various architectural styles, ranging from Romanesque remains dating from the 10th century to Gothic alterations from the 14th century. It was probably founded around 880 by Prince Bořivoj of the Přemyslid dynasty. Prague Castle is open to the public for visits to historic buildings and exhibitions, as well as concerts, guided tours and other activities.

The National Museum – Ethnographic Department presents exhibitions featuring unique artefacts of folk culture from the Bohemian lands and Europe. Folklore ensembles also perform there.

History

The historic centre of Prague has preserved its overall form, layout and spatial composition, as it was spared large-scale urban renewal and extensive demolition.

Old Town Square developed as a marketplace from the 10th century onwards at a crossroads of European trade routes. It was established in the 12th century and was the scene of numerous historical events. Charles Bridge is the oldest surviving bridge in Prague.

Cityscape

The fortified settlement of Vyšehrad was established around the middle of the 10th century. The Vyšehrad promontory above the Vltava offers exceptional views of Prague. The Vyšehrad grounds are freely accessible all year round.

Open spaces

Petřín is one of Prague’s most extensive urban green spaces. Petřín Park is criss-crossed by paths with benches and has several children’s playgrounds.
