Kunratice Between Forest and History
Accommodation in Kunratice
For a trip to Kunratice, nature, architectural history, and a recurring November event offer different focal points. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you are especially interested in a larger forest area, historical traces, or an event held on a set date.
Forest and Protected Stream Landscape
Kunratický les covers nearly 300 hectares and lies within the cadastral districts of Krč, Michle, Kunratice, and Chodov. It therefore extends across four districts and cannot be understood solely through the name Kunratice. If the forest is important to your stay, keep this broader geographical context in mind: Kunratický les refers to an extensive natural area.
A more precisely defined natural feature is the protected stretch of the Kunratický potok stream. It extends from the Kunratice Horní mlýn to the Labuť pond. These two named endpoints give the protected area a clearly defined geographical span. This allows you to distinguish the protected stream section as a distinct landscape feature from the extensive forest.
History from the Middle Ages to the Baroque Period
Construction of Nový hrad began in 1411 at the behest of King Wenceslas IV. Only the palace’s foundation walls and remnants of the siege camp have survived to this day. A precisely dated start to construction and a limited number of surviving remains stand side by side here: the history begins in the early 15th century, and the surviving parts are those of the palace and siege camp.
A later historical landmark is the Church of St. James the Elder in Kunratice. It underwent extensive renovation from 1730 to 1736 and acquired its present High Baroque appearance. In contrast to Nový hrad, this brings a later building phase to the fore. If you are interested in architectural history, you can clearly distinguish a 15th-century construction project from the renovation of a church in the 18th century.
Guided Excursion and November Event
The “Excursion into Kunratický les” program is a 120-minute outdoor excursion led by a forester through Kunratický les. You can submit a booking request; confirm availability before your trip. The duration gives you a specific time frame for this guided forest program. When planning for your family, you can weigh this time commitment against your other travel interests.
Velká Kunratická takes place every year on the second Sunday in November in Kunratický les in Prague and has been held without interruption since 1934. Check the date and organizational details for the year you plan to travel. The recurring Sunday answers a different planning question from the length of the excursion: it provides a calendar reference, while the 120 minutes describe the duration of a program.
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can compare the different focal points: the forest and protected stream section appeal to nature lovers, while Nový hrad and the church represent different historical periods. If Velká Kunratická is the deciding factor, plan your trip around the November event and check the information for your travel year.
