Plzeň combines an impressive urban history with unusual cultural venues, science, a beer tradition and varied routes through the countryside. The tower of St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral is particularly striking: at 102.26 metres, it is the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic. The city is also crossed by a historic underground visitor route: it is around 800 metres long and leads 9 to 12 metres below ground.

The Romanesque Rotunda of St. Peter and Paul is one of the oldest surviving church buildings of its kind in the Czech Republic. It can be reached on foot via a marked educational trail and offers views of the surrounding area.

Nature and Trails

The Bolevecké Ponds system in Plzeň consists of ten ponds, several of which were created as early as the mid-15th century. Today, there are cycle paths, hiking trails, inline skating routes and two accessible circular trails. The Bolevecké Ponds can be reached by public transport.

The city’s green landscape also includes Sofronka Arboretum, with more than 60 pine species from around the world. A cycle route leads through Plzeň as far as Hradiště; there, it offers play features for children and opportunities for swimming.

Science, the Zoo and Industrial Heritage

At Plzeň Zoo, birds of prey demonstrations take place in the amphitheatre, where visitors can see the birds in flight while a falconer comments on the performance. The Techmania Science Center offers interactive exhibits, a 3D planetarium, workshop and laboratory programmes, films shown on an interactive globe, and science shows. Techmania is housed in historic buildings belonging to the Škoda Works.

Beer and Culinary Venues

The Pilsner Urquell Brewery also preserves a historic method of production: large wooden barrels are still used in the brewery cellars to produce small quantities of Pilsner Urquell. The tour of the Pilsner Urquell Brewery includes a tasting of unfiltered, unpasteurised beer served from oak lagering barrels in the historic brewery cellars.

DEPO2015 is a cultural venue for exhibitions, conferences, events and festivals. It also hosts the DEPO Street Food Market, with food stalls and food trucks.
