Ústí nad Orlicí District: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Culture and history

Litice Castle stands on a hill in a bend of the Divoká Orlice, surrounded by extensive forests. Under Jiří of Poděbrady, it was extensively rebuilt by 1468 and was one of the most important fortresses in Bohemia in the 15th century. The ruins of Lanšperk Castle are also situated on a wooded hill above the valley of the Tichá Orlice; they were probably founded in the mid-13th century.

The Králíky Municipal Museum documents the history of the Králicko region and displays collections of nativity scenes, minerals, insects, birds and mammals. Exhibitions, lectures and concerts are also held there; the museum also includes an information centre. The Military History Educational Trail in Králíky connects the Hůrka artillery fortress, the Králíky Military Museum, a lookout point and the K-S 14 infantry bunker. The Králíky Military Museum can be reached by train to Prostřední Lipka station and then by walking approximately 300 metres.

The Museum of Crafts in Letohrad is dedicated to historical occupations in food production, including milling, baking, cheese-making, butter-making, soda-water production and beekeeping. A moving display with 25 carved craftsmen demonstrates 15 trades. The museum also exhibits more than 100 historical nativity scenes, almost half of which were made by carvers from Králicko.

The Stations of the Cross behind the Tichá Orlice follow a forest path towards Andrlův chlum and comprise 14 stations. Stations I to XI are small chapels, while Stations XII to XIV form larger chapels. Station XIII is the Kalvárie Chapel, and Station XIV is the Boží hrob Chapel.

Landscape and water

The Orlické Mountains extend into the eastern part of the district. This is where Suchý vrch, at 995 metres, and Buková hora, at 958 metres, are located; the north-eastern part is mainly characterised by the Králický Sněžník massif. The district lies on the great European watershed. Its most important rivers include the Tichá Orlice, Divoká Orlice, Třebovka and Moravská Sázava.

The Pastviny Reservoir is the district’s largest body of water and covers 110 hectares. Climatic conditions change significantly with elevation: Vysokomýtsko is the warmest and driest area, Lanškrounsko is cooler and wetter, while Králicko and the higher-lying Žambersko are among the coldest and wettest parts of the Pardubický kraj.

Forests cover 31.9 percent of the district – the highest proportion among the districts of the Pardubický kraj. The central and northern foothill and upland areas without larger settlements are among the least anthropogenically influenced areas of the Pardubický kraj.

Routes and activities

The Orlicko-Třebovsko area offers cycling, inline skating, canoeing, activities in a rope park and the use of a climbing wall. The Choceň–Ústí nad Orlicí–Letohrad cycle path is also documented there. A seven-kilometre hiking route from Ústí nad Orlicí reaches the lookout point on Andrlův chlum via the Stations of the Cross.

At the Pastviny Dam, pedal boating, boating, stand-up paddleboarding and fishing are possible. The Geological and Water Museum in Nature also has an educational station at the Klopotský pramen spring.
