Culture and history

The Chotěbuz-Podobora Archaeopark presents life in an early medieval hillfort through interactive interpretation. The Archaeopark can be reached by train, bus, car or bicycle; cycle route 6257 passes by it along the Olše and Odra rivers.

Kotulova dřevěnka in Havířov was built in 1781. It is the last surviving evidence of the original settlement of present-day Havířov and depicts domestic life in Těšín Silesia around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Fryštát Castle is also described as a prominent Empire-style cultural heritage site in the region. Karviná’s Historic Value Map describes 35 places connected with the history of the vanished city. Nature and trails

In the Hraniční meandry Odry protected area, around 7 km of the meandering Odra is preserved on the Czech-Polish border. Hraniční meandry Odry is part of the Natura 2000 network and the Heřmanský stav–Odra–Poolší bird protection area. The Těrlické mokřady educational trail is 2.5 km long and follows the Stonávka River through alluvial forest and wetlands.

Karviná-rybníky is a habitat for the hermit beetle and has been included in Natura 2000. Skučák is a habitat for notable waterbirds, including great crested grebes and several species of duck.

Leisure and city life

The Loděnice recreational area on a dead arm of the Olše offers sports facilities, quiet areas, boat trips and fishing opportunities. At Karviná’s historic Masaryk Square, visitors can find cafés, restaurants, a confectionery, a tea room and fast-food options.

Boženy Němcové Park was laid out in the English style in 1804 and covers 36 hectares. It offers opportunities for cycling, skating, boating, fishing and walking. Seasonal carriage rides in Karviná pass through the park; longer rides continue as far as Lázeňský Park.
