Tmaň lies in a small depression southwest of Beroun on the edge of the Český kras Protected Landscape Area. Between historic buildings and signposted trails, the character of the village ranges from Rococo architecture to the karst formations of Kotýz.
Culture and History
The château in Tmaň is a three-winged, three-storey building with a façade articulated by Rococo elements. The painter M. Aleš visited the château in Tmaň between 1909 and 1912, found there the landscape of his later years, and drew several pictures of Tmaň.
Archaeological finds show that the site of St. George’s Church, standing alone outside the village at a crossroads and surrounded by a cemetery, is an ancient place of worship at the centre of an extensive burial ground whose origins date back to the Bronze Age. The cross and bell tower by the pond in Tmaň were erected in 1899.
The niche chapel of Saint Blaise on Koukolova hora was commissioned in 1832 by Antonín Karel Mudroch, then rector of Charles University and owner of the Tmaň estate. The niche chapel of Saint Blaise on Koukolova hora was completely restored in 2010; older maps marked it as a ruin.
In Tmaň, a Gothic portal has been preserved on the ground floor of a single-storey building with a small tower; the building is awaiting reconstruction.
Hiking and Nature
The Koukolova hora–Kotýz–Koněprusy educational trail leads over Koukolova hora, past the niche chapel of Saint Blaise and a former limestone quarry. The Koukolova hora–Kotýz educational trail is a 5.2 km hiking route with 13 stops and information panels.
The Koukolova hora–Kotýz educational trail begins in Slavíky near Tmaň and leads through the surroundings of Tmaň to the Kotýz National Nature Monument, with significant karst formations as well as protected flora and fauna of the rocky steppes.
A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from the Králův Dvůr-Popovice railway station on line 170 from Prague to Pilsen up to Koukolova hora and continues to the Koněprusy Caves.
