Culture and history

Kutná Hora developed through silver mining and became a royal town in the 14th century. The Church of St Barbara is a Gothic landmark; its interior features frescoes depicting the secular life of the medieval mining town. The former Cistercian cathedral in Sedlec was restored in the Baroque style by Jan Blažej Santini in the early 18th century.

Kačina houses the Museum of Czech Rural Life in an Empire-style château. It includes a Chotek library, salons, a historic pharmacy and a period theatre. Guided tours at Kačina cover the history of the Chotek family, the daily life of servants and the changes on aristocratic estates in the 19th century.

Routes and experiences

The Hrádek Silver Route covers medieval mining, silver processing, coin minting, a horse-powered trejv and an authentic medieval mine. The medieval mine in Kutná Hora is open to visitors via a 33-metre staircase; visitors wear traditional miners’ clothing, helmets and lamps.

The red-marked trail from Žleby leads via Ronov nad Doubravou, Žlebské Chvalovice, Krkanka and Rudov to the ruins of Lichnice Castle. At the Milota of Kolowrat trail near Zruč Castle, activities include axe throwing, archery, climbing, balance obstacles, fishing and skittles.

The “Příběh řeky Sázavy” exhibition in Zruč nad Sázavou explores vanished water-related crafts as well as the flora and fauna of the Sázava. One ticket includes admission to both chapels of the ossuary and to the UNESCO-listed Cathedral of the Assumption of Our Lady and St John the Baptist in Sedlec.

Nature

Žleby Castle is about a 15-minute walk from the railway station. A bus stop is located in the square directly below the castle. There are two car parks near the castle complex.

Žleby Castle Park covers approximately 24 hectares and makes use of the steep castle slope and a canyon-like bend of the Doubrava River. More than 50 species of small birds and songbirds live in the park; there is also a reserve where white deer and red deer are kept.

The Kačina Nature Monument comprises preserved hardwood floodplain forests, wetlands and wet meadows and is known for its rare insects.

Food and wine

Kutná Hora Winery offers an enogastronomic tasting that pairs five local wines with dishes made from ingredients sourced from the region. Wine tastings at the St Ursula Monastery in Kutná Hora include tours of the historic monastery cellars.
