Passenger ferry route 409 connects Zadar's central harbour with Preko on the island of Ugljan. It operates numerous times daily and takes 25 minutes to cross.
Culture and History
The remains of the medieval fortress of the same name are located on Sv. Mihovil Hill in Preko on the island of Ugljan. Historically, it played an important role, particularly during the Venetian siege of the city of Zadar in 1345 and 1346.
A 3 km-long paved road leads to Sv. Mihovil Fortress and is suitable for cars, bicycles and pedestrians.
The Old Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Preko was built in 1765 on the foundations of an older church. That church, in turn, stood on the foundations of the even older early Christian Church of Saint Andrew.
The small stone Church of Saint John the Baptist stands by the ferry landing in Preko and was built towards the end of the 11th century. It is considered the most valuable example of early Romanesque architecture.
The preserved summer residence of the Crnica family includes the Crnica Renaissance Garden, with laurel, holm oaks and pine trees. The complex also included an olive grove and an olive mill.
The island of Galevac, also called Školjić, lies opposite Preko. Its monastery houses a monastic library whose collection of old and rare books has been protected as cultural heritage of the Republic of Croatia since 2016. Galevac is also home to the museum collection of Saint Paul the Hermit.
Nature and Trails
The island of Ugljan has kilometres of trails along dry-stone walls that are suitable for cycling and hiking.
There are more than 40 climbing routes on Željina Hill southwest of Sv. Mihovil; the climbing area is open year-round.
More than 200,000 olive trees grow on the island of Ugljan. Muline has a long-standing tradition of olive pressing.
Water and Activities
The traditional Å kola mora i jedrenja sea and sailing school takes place in July and August 2026. It offers children educational and practical activities on the water focused on sailing and maritime skills.
