Konjevrate: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Culture
The Church of Saint John the Baptist in Konjevrate is a building with several historical layers. Restoration work revealed a pre-Romanesque construction phase dating from the 9th century. This was later followed by a Romanesque redesign with a bell tower from the 12th or 13th century; the present structure incorporates the older walls. Inside are Baroque altars, a Venetian silver processional cross from the 18th century, and a painting of John the Baptist from the 19th century.
The parish church stands on a small hill near the road junctions toward Drniš and Unešić. Immediately next to the Church of Saint John, at the present-day cemetery, lies the Early Neolithic archaeological site. Archaeological and conservation investigations of the Church of Saint John uncovered six fragments of pre-Romanesque reliefs in 2003.
The older building incorporated into the Church of Saint John the Baptist has a Romanesque main portal dating from no later than the 13th century. The pottery from the Early Neolithic site of Konjevrate belongs to the Impressed Ware culture.
Konjevrate is documented in late medieval and early modern records under the historical name Koljevrate. It is also home to the first investigated open-air Palaeolithic site identified along the entire eastern Adriatic coast. Thousands of fragments of flint tools and weapons were found at this site. A tombstone made from a stone slab has been preserved in Konjevrate near the Church of Saint John.
