Archaeology

In Stari Šematorij, there are 370 early Croatian graves dating from the 9th to the 15th century, featuring various types of jewellery. At Bitinj, there are traces of a Neolithic settlement, including ceramics and artefacts made of flint and bone.

Rider on the Gradina hill was the centre of the prehistoric Delmatian community of the Ridita. Gradina is a prehistoric settlement of the Iron Age community of the Ridita.

Šematorij contains a Roman urban villa complex with baths. An early Christian basilica was built on the baths of the Roman urban villa complex in Šematorij.

Culture and History

The Danilo culture is considered to be characterised by well-formed, fired vessels such as pots, pans and plates.

During the Roman era, Danilo was known as Rider and was a large settlement with more than 10,000 inhabitants. In Late Antiquity, Gradina was used again as a settlement site; water cisterns, walls and settlement structures from this period have been documented.

From the archaeological site in Danilo, visitors can walk to the hill with the remains of the old Gradina fortification. The proposed archaeological journey “Journey Through Time” includes Danilo as its first stop.
