Pokrovnik is home to the Copića njive archaeological site, where remains from the Impressed Ware and Danilo phases of Neolithic culture have been preserved. Excavations revealed massive Early Neolithic structures there, described as unique and previously unknown in the Neolithic period of the eastern Adriatic region.
Those who have chosen Pokrovnik as their destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment.
Culture and History
The history of the village also includes the Church of Saint Michael, which stood on Gradina. After it was burned down and destroyed by the Ottomans, it was rebuilt in 1705. Spolia made of red marble have been incorporated into the exterior steps of the building at Pećina; they may have come from the altar of the Church of Saint Michael on Gradina.
After its restoration, Pećina became an important cultural and tourist site in the Drniš area. Above Vrelo Pećina stands a stone building with Neoclassical features, complementing the site's cultural heritage value. The wider region around Pokrovnik also includes Barone Fortress, Fort Saint John, Fort Saint Michael, and Sveti Nikola.
Water and Landscape
Vrelo Pećina is an inexhaustible source of drinking water in Pokrovnik. The water remains cold and refreshing in summer, even in very hot weather. Slapovi Krke, Skradinski buk, Crni Vrh, and Moseć Planina are located in the vicinity of Pokrovnik.
