Ivanec: Apartments and Holiday Homes

Four marked routes from the surrounding area lead to the summit of Ivančica around Ivanec. The mountain reaches a summit elevation of 1,060 metres. The Mountaineering Museum was founded to promote mountaineering as a way of life; Ivančica is the central natural focus in this regard.

Nature

Ivančica offers a gentle ascent suitable for family outings, as well as more demanding routes for experienced hikers. The Ivanečka planinarska obilaznica is a marked circular trail connecting eight places at the foot of Ivančica. It is 18.5 kilometres long and can be completed in approximately six hours of walking.

The Ivanečki romarski put begins in front of the Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Ivanec and ends at the Marian shrine in Marija Bistrica. It is marked with a white cross on a yellow square and has designated rest areas and drinking-water springs. The route is 28 kilometres long and takes approximately eight hours, including a one-hour break.

In Ivanec, there are easier and more demanding hiking trails to Ivančica, opportunities for cycling through the surrounding hills, visits to the Visitor Centre and the Mountaineering Museum, as well as access to the Žgano vino spring.

Getting Around

The Ivanec Cycling Route is a 63-kilometre circular route that begins at Trg hrvatskih ivanovaca and on Frankopanska Street. The Ivanec cultural route Cool Tour can be explored by bicycle or on foot.

Culture

Ivanec also offers visits to the Visitor Centre and the Mountaineering Museum. The same museum hosts cultural events, exhibitions, book and project presentations, as well as the “Night of Museums” event; students and groups can visit it by prior arrangement.

The Visitor Centre is located in the only surviving building of the complex of the old town of Ivanec and provides tourist information, brochures and leaflets. Its terrace is used during city events for various outdoor cultural and educational events.

Archaeological excavations at the Stari grad Ivanec site uncovered finds from the Roman period. The Church of Saint Mary Magdalene in Ivanec was built in the 18th century and acquired its present form in the 19th century. The Sveti Duh Chapel is a single-nave Gothic building, probably erected at the end of the 14th century, and contains two carved Baroque altars.

The Margečan Watermill is a reproduction of traditional construction and is located next to an old river branch of the Bednja. The difference in elevation between the source and mouth of the Bistrica stream enabled a water-powered system with 20 structures, including mills and sawmills.

Urban Landscape

The Bistrica stream forms picturesque cascades as it flows through the centre of Ivanec. The Ivanečki bajeri lakes were formed after underground mining shafts collapsed and now serve as fishing waters.

Ivanec City Park was transformed from a neglected pond and meadow into an English garden. It features a pavilion that is used year-round for various events. An old linden tree in the city park is over 600 years old and is considered a symbol of the city.

Events

Ivanec Town Days are celebrated on 24 June in honour of Saint John the Baptist and include a multi-day programme with exhibitions, concerts, and entertainment and sporting events. During Ivanec Town Days, visitors can enjoy the traditional dish Ivanečki kotlić.
