Since the 17th century, Orebić has been an important center of the merchant fleet of the Republic of Dubrovnik. The Orebić shipyard was ceremoniously opened in 1875 during a visit by Emperor Franz Joseph.
The Maritime Museum of Orebić houses archaeological, maritime, and historical book collections. It displays nautical charts, seafaring books, travel documents, ropes, pictures of famous sailing ships, and ship tools.
In Orebić, the Franciscan monastery is located on Mount St. Elijah at 150 meters above sea level; it is a scenic lookout point. The monastery houses the Votive Museum. The captains' cemetery behind the church includes the Mimbelli family mausoleum.
