Coastline and Townscape

Bakarac is considered a coastal village whose shoreline consists of concrete beaches. The sequence of beaches in Bakarac includes Zminca, Kupalište, Mala plažica, Palada, Skalada, Melina, Prva kućica, Sridnja ućica, Sansovo and Kavranić. Numerous springs ensure that the sea temperature at Bakarac’s beaches is lower.

Culture and History

The parish church of St Peter the Apostle in Bakarac dates from the 18th century. There are also three Roman milestones in the village.

Gradac, an archaeological site with the remains of a Bronze Age fortification, lies south of Bakarac. The modest site comprises the ruins of ancient structures and the remains of an ancient fortification system. The last active tuna-fishing post was named “Bakarac” and was used until the middle of the 20th century.

Paths and Routes

The path to the tuna observation posts is an 8-kilometre point-to-point trail with an estimated duration of 2.5 hours. It runs 30 percent on asphalt and 70 percent off-road. The path includes Bakarac as well as several tuna observation posts along Bakar Bay.

“Stazama naših nona” is a marked, circular and easy 10.7-kilometre trail suitable for all age groups. As a loop trail, it runs along the waterfront promenade to Bakarac, then through Šmrika and Banja back to Kraljevica. The “Frankopan roads” route passes through Bakarac both on the outward and return journeys.

The “Along the Hunters Paths” adventure tour leads through the forests of Bakarac along old Roman roads. It also visits an old forest cemetery and church buildings overgrown with ivy. Hiking trips, “Bark & Hike” programmes, and walks for dogs and their owners are organised along “Stazama naših nona” throughout the year.

Tradition on the Water

“Tira, tira” is a reconstruction of traditional tuna fishing. The reconstruction can be observed from the shore or from boats in Bakar Bay. After the reconstruction, “Tira, tira” offers traditional tuna dishes.
