Ponikve: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Ponikve presents karst in an unusually changeable form: here, a karst lake appears and disappears. After a longer period of rain, treetops may emerge from the water of the temporary karst lake. During heavy rainfall or snowmelt, Lake Ponikve can form and reach depths of more than 20 metres.

Nature

The circular Ponikve promenade around the lake, “Now you see me, now you don’t”, is equipped with information boards about the area’s natural heritage. The Ponikve educational trail also highlights the endemic “Entire-Petalled Gorse”. Suhi Vrh, Kamenjak and Sveti Križ are located near Ponikve; Strmica is also situated in the surrounding area.

Trails and activities

The Ponikve educational trail has two starting points. The Kukuljanovo–Gradina–Ponikve–Kukuljanovo educational trail is 8.5 kilometres long. In spring or after heavy rain, the Lake Ponikve Trail is associated with seasonal dives between submerged trees, hunting lodges and paths.

Ponikve can also be incorporated into a longer mountain bike route: the “Viewpoints of Bakar’s hinterland” MTB loop descends to Ponikve and then ends in Škrljevo.

Culture and history

Near Ponikve, the route leads to the remains of an Illyrian fortress near Gradina, which overlooks the surrounding settlements and the Bay of Bakar. Fort Maltempo is also located in the surrounding area. In the wider regional area are Fulfinum Mirine and Fulfinum Forum, while Trsatska Gradina belongs to the area surrounding Ponikve.
