The Municipality of Vela Luka combines a long archaeological history with hiking trails, public art and its own culinary tradition. Vela Spila, an important archaeological cave site in the Mediterranean, is particularly significant. It was inhabited from the late Palaeolithic to the Middle Bronze Age. The cave lies on the southern slope of Pinski rat hill, 130 m above Kale Bay in Vela Luka. Here, traces of prehistory sit alongside outdoor experiences and cultural discoveries.
Archaeology and Art in Vela Luka
The museum collections of the Vela Luka Cultural Centre are housed in a former school building constructed in the second half of the 19th century. They include works of modern and contemporary art as well as archaeological material from Vela Spila. You will also encounter art in public spaces: mosaics created during the 1968 international artists’ gathering can be found in public areas, along promenades and in public institutions in Vela Luka. Both the site’s long history and more recent artistic works are therefore part of the town’s cultural character.
Hiking Trails with a Variety of Views
The fully marked Hum hiking trail starts in Vela Luka at Gospa od zdravlja in Bobovišća. It is 2.5 km long, takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes, and is considered easy. The trail offers views of Vela Luka Bay, the sea and neighbouring islands. The fully marked Dub circular hiking trail offers a different route description: it starts either at Gospe od zdravlja in Bobovišća or at the Tommy supermarket, passes through wooded areas and offers views of Vela Luka and its surroundings.
If you would like to make the archaeological site your hiking destination, you can include the Vela Spila hiking trail in your travel plans. It leads from Vela Luka to the important site above the town. The outdoor offering also includes more than 100 km of hiking and cycling trails. They run through centuries-old olive groves, along beaches, and through vineyards and pine forests. Ošjak is protected as a park forest. Sporting events are also associated with the cave: the Vela strka 22 km and Mala strka 11 km trail races start at the prehistoric site of Vela Spila.
Local Tradition and Travel Interests
Lumblija is a ceremonial sweet bread and an aromatic dessert prepared in Vela Luka in the run-up to All Saints’ Day. The multi-day event “Stajun od lumblije” includes workshops where participants can make their first Lumblija. Pilgrims visit Vela Luka on the Camino Korčula, both individually and in larger and smaller organised groups.
