Culture and Townscape

The old village centre of Rovinjsko Selo is characterised by residential and agricultural complexes with masonry wells. The old village centre has been preserved in the Lakuverča locality; it includes residential and commercial complexes with courtyards, landscaped wells and baladours.

The parish church of Rovinjsko Selo dates from 1593 to 1595 and is dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot. The single-nave building has a straight rear end and a baptistery. Rovinjsko Selo was founded in 1526 by Dalmatian immigrants from the area around Zadar.

Some older houses still contain ovens that are approximately one hundred years old. The local cultural heritage also includes a variant of the Balun, a typical Istrian dance.

Antonja

Antonja is an annual exhibition of wine and olive oil held in Rovinjsko Selo every January. The first Antonja exhibition took place on 17 January 1992. It is considered the oldest wine exhibition in Istria and is an annual competition and entertainment festival at which wines and olive oils are promoted and awarded.

Surroundings

In the immediate surroundings, around one kilometre from Rovinjsko Selo, stands the 15th-century Church of Our Lady of the Snows, with traces of two layers of frescoes. West of the settlement lies Turnina Hill, with a prehistoric hillfort and the ruins of a Late Antique fortification.

Cycling, Hiking and Nature Trails

The Basìlica cycling and hiking trail is part of the Limes Cycling Route. Its starting and finishing points are in Valalta and Rovinjsko Selo. The route is 18.7 kilometres long and has a low level of technical difficulty.

Circular Route 402, “The Wondrous Terrain of the Lim Channel”, runs from Rovinjsko Selo to the Limski kanal and back. It is 7.2 kilometres long and classified as easy. The Lim Channel, to which the circular route leads, is considered a protected landscape area and a special marine reserve.
