The parish church of St. Martin in Tar contains religious artworks and sculptures. Classical music concerts are held there in summer. A stone inscription commemorates Pope Pius VII's visit to Tarska Vala on 13 and 14 August 1800.

Near Tar lies the Stancija Blek–Sv. Križ archaeological zone, a settlement and fortification dating from Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Parts of the Roman villa rustica have been preserved in the tower walls built in opus quadratum. Remains of presses and oil mills indicate wine and olive oil production.

The Fisherman's House Santa Marina is home to an interpretation centre where visitors can learn about the lives of local fishermen. The exhibition uses fishing equipment and other objects to present fishing as an important activity in Tar and Vabriga.

History

Tar prospered in the 18th and 19th centuries through oil and wine exports connected to the port in Tarska Bay. The former settlement associated with Tar is now known as Stari Tar and is also called Torre Vecchia.

Getting Around

The official, easy cycling route 121 Staza Maslina is 14.9 kilometres long and leads from Tar/Vabriga via Santa Marina and Stancija Blek to Vabriga. The cycling tour explores the olive-growing area of the Lanterna peninsula in a Mediterranean setting.

The Od ulike do ulja trail is suitable for cycling. Horse riding is also possible on its first section; horses can be rented at the starting point. There is a bus connection for the return journey from Tar to Lanterna in connection with this route.
