Culture

The Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Kuj was built in the 17th century on the site of an earlier sacred building. A Roman mosaic was found beneath its floor; the floor is glazed so that it remains visible.

The church stands directly above Kuje Bay, which is considered Ližnjan’s most direct access to the sea. Kuje Bay probably served as an anchorage for boats and ships from prehistoric times onwards. Kuje has been recorded as a settlement and harbour since the end of the 12th century.

The remains of three shipwrecks near Cape Uljeva form a hydroarchaeological site listed in the Register of Cultural Goods. The Uljeva A shipwreck preserves numerous remains of large early Roman amphorae.

In the nearby area, the Marlera Lighthouse was built near several islets and reefs to improve navigational safety in an area with strong sea currents and winter winds. From its construction until 1970, the lighthouse was continuously inhabited.

Coast

Cape Uljeva is a natural pebble beach overlooking the Kvarner Sea and the islands. The cape can be reached via the unpaved road that continues behind Bura Bura Beach. Marlera is a pebble beach located in Ližnjan.

Activities

Cycle route 333 leads from Ušićevi Dvori to the sea and continues along the coast to Marlera. Kuje Bay and Marlera are designated as suitable locations for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Marlera is also designated as a suitable location for surfing without wind.
