Plomin lies on the slopes of Plominska gora, whose limestone face drops almost vertically to the sea. The town combines this setting with a historic center and medieval and Renaissance fortifications. Those who have chosen Plomin as their travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment here.
History and Culture
The buildings include the Church of St. George the Old, a Romanesque church from the 11th century that later served as the brotherhood church of Plomin’s fishermen and seafarers. Its Romanesque bell tower is one of the three surviving Romanesque bell towers in Istria. The parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, also known as St. George the Younger, was built in 1474. Its furnishings include three Baroque altars, carved woodwork, liturgical silver and gilded objects, as well as a fresco known as the “Nursing Madonna.” A town loggia was added nearby in 1650.
The historic town is enclosed by medieval walls from the 13th and 14th centuries and Renaissance fortification walls from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Plomin Inscription is a stone relief of the Illyrian-Roman god Silvanus with a later-added Glagolitic inscription and is considered one of the oldest monuments of the Croatian language.
Traditions
Bela nedeja is a traditional religious folk festival in Plomin held on the first Sunday in October. It includes a mass as well as entertainment and sporting events. The regularly held market for local products features cured meats, honey, chestnuts, cheese, handicrafts and local wines.
Nature
Around the houses, church, walls and baladurs of Plomin, the endemic Istrian bellflower Campanula Istriaca Feer blooms in late May and early June. The program of the Istrian Bellflower Days in Plomin included discussion panels, exhibitions, singing and music.
Hiking and Trails
The Babino sklonište–Plomin stage is listed as 22.8 kilometers long, with a duration of 8–9 hours and a “easy” difficulty rating. The PP 722 hiking trail begins at the D66 state road by Hotel Flanona at Vidikovac Plomin, climbs up to Lanišče and ends in Sitodraž. The “Zvončić zove u Plomin” event also included a guided hiking trail on Plominska gora that started in Plomin’s old town.
By the Water
The Rt Mašnjak snorkeling site below Plomin is accessible exclusively from the sea and is reached by boat or SUP. In the nearby area, a coastal promenade leads from Plomin Luka along the coast to the beaches; the snorkeling site lies several hundred meters farther on.
