Accommodation in Municipality of Karojba
In the Municipality of Karojba, distinctive landscapes meet traces from different eras. Protected pines, an impressive doline, and ancient springs stand alongside churches, frescoes, and a themed trail about the Istrian Boundary Dispute. Regional dishes also add their own distinctive touch. This lets you tailor your stay to different interests—from nature and history to cuisine.
Natural monuments and historic landscapes
The botanical natural monument “Ćetiri Pinije u Karojbi” has been protected since 1966. The four pines stand along the road between Karojba and Pazin. The oldest trunk has a circumference of 3.30 metres and a height of 14.5 metres—specific measurements that give the natural monument a distinctive presence.
Dolac Sopajac lies between Karojba and Vižinada, near Škropeti. It is considered the largest and deepest doline in Istria. Access to its floor is difficult because of the terrain and vegetation. The Valigaštar spring is near the hamlet of Močibobi; its water was already used in Roman and Byzantine times. In antiquity, a Roman military camp was probably located near the spring; Roman roads also crossed nearby.
The wooded hills around the Valigaštar and Vrućak springs also contain historic archaeological sites. They had been settled since prehistoric times. Here, natural features and the landscape are therefore linked with a long history of settlement.
Churches, frescoes, and architectural history
The churches tell of different periods of construction. The single-nave parish Church of All Saints in Karojba was built in 1580, extended in 1840 and 1913, and restored in 1986. The Church of St Andrew in Karojba dates from the 13th century, contains remains from the 8th century, and stands on the site of a former Roman necropolis.
The hamlet of Konobari is home to the 12th-century Church of St Mary Magdalene, with a bell dating from 1607. In Rakotule, the Romanesque Chapel of St Nicholas preserves frescoes depicting Christ in Majesty, or Maiestas Domini, as well as scenes from the legends of Saint Nicholas. The construction dates, older remains, and frescoes offer different points of interest for anyone curious about the layered history of the churches.
Themed trail and regional cuisine
Near Karojba is the marked trail of the Istrian Boundary Dispute. It begins at the Lourdes Grotto, built in 1898; information boards explain the boundary dispute in four languages. On the Parenzana, the former railway station area is just before Karojba. From there, you can walk to the viaduct over the Krvar stream in less than five minutes.
Regional cuisine includes maneštra and homemade pasta such as fuži, njoki, pasutice, and ravioli. Wild asparagus is another ingredient, while truffles are considered an autumn speciality. These dishes add a culinary perspective on the region to its nature and history.
When choosing a holiday apartment in the Municipality of Karojba, consider which themes appeal to you most: natural features and springs, churches and frescoes, or historical context along the themed trail. The variety of themes can help you shape your stay around your own interests rather than limiting it to a single focus.
