Cycling Route 683: Circuit Route and Planning Information

The official cycling route 683 Stazom Grimanijevih passes through Žagrići and follows a circuit from Svetvinčenat via Žminj and back to Svetvinčenat. The section in Žagrići is therefore part of a longer loop; for day-trip planning, consider the stated total distance.

The entire route is 34 kilometres long, fully paved and classified as easy. The estimated riding time from start to finish is approximately one hour and 20 minutes to one hour and 40 minutes. If you are planning to ride with children, you can consider the classification and distance together: “Easy” refers to the difficulty level, while 34 kilometres indicates the length of the circuit. Check the route conditions and signage before setting off.

A Local Detail, a Long Building History

A 2018 editorial report describes a relief on a façade in Žagrići showing a person holding a skull. Near the destination is the Church of St. Foška, built during the Byzantine period in the 6th century. It was destroyed in the 7th century and rebuilt around 800 during Frankish rule.

The church’s present structure was built in the early 18th century, incorporating the front and side walls of the earlier pre-Romanesque church. A bell tower was added to the front façade in the mid-18th century. On the side façade, perforated stone slabs known as transennae close the window openings. Such slabs are characteristic of 6th-century early Christian architecture.

Općina Žminj: Cultural Sights and Seasonal Experiences

Within the wider destination of Općina Žminj, Žminj offers its own historical highlights. Today, only a smaller part of the citadel is visible, including one of its four round towers, a wing of the fortress and an outer section of the fortifications. Surviving structures also include remnants of the 15th-century town walls, the Baroque parish church of St. Michael and three churches decorated with frescoes. The well-preserved public cistern dates from 1863.

Route 761 Žminj–Feštini starts next to the tower in Žminj, passes through the square in front of the parish church of St. Michael and continues through the old town along the old stone street “Štradi.” An official cycling route itinerary also starts in Žminj and connects the village with Feštinsko kraljevstvo Cave. Inside the cave, safe paths extend for approximately 100 metres; check whether access is currently possible before visiting.

The seasonal, one-hour guided tour “Žminjska štuorija” introduces visitors to the history, customs and language of Žminj’s residents, as well as its sacred and secular architectural heritage. It includes tastings of specialities from local producers and a demonstration of how to prepare Istrian pasta, including makaruni and fuži. Check seasonal dates in advance. Bartulja, a folk festival in Žminj with a tradition of at least one hundred years, is also held on the last Saturday in August; check the specific date for your travel year.
