Geography
The Baćina Lakes are located a few kilometres from Ploče. They consist of seven lakes and are home to a rich variety of wildlife, archaeological remains of the Roman village of Praetoria, and a cycling and hiking trail around the lakes. Activities at the Baćina Lakes include traditional boat photo safaris, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, cycling, swimming in hidden lagoons and wildlife watching.
Water and Nature
The protected Neretva Delta is located near Ploče and is home to more than 300 bird species. The Neretva estuary near Ploče offers shallow-water hiking across sandbanks as well as kitesurfing and windsurfing.
In the nearby Staševica Valley, unpaved country lanes offer cycling routes. Cycling there can be combined with a stop at a local winery. On nearby Višnjica Hill, a walk leads to a viewpoint associated with the military history of Ploče.
History and Townscape
Ploče was first mentioned in 1387 – at that time as a bay rather than a town. The port of Ploče and the railway began operating on 15 July 1945. The town’s post-war development followed the reconstruction of the port and railway. The townscape features characteristic architecture from the socialist era.
Activities
The Ploče Trail is a mountain running event on the themed route “Tragom bunkera”. It starts in a suburb of Ploče and passes eight bunkers, two abandoned hamlets and several Illyrian tumuli. The trail includes a 17-kilometre route with 800 metres of elevation gain and a 7-kilometre route with 250 metres of elevation gain.
Traditions and Culinary Delights
Historically, Lađa boats transported fruit and vegetables through the Neretva canal network. The route of the Lađa Boat Marathon runs from Metković via Opuzen to Ploče. The marathon is held every August to revive the tradition of Neretva Lađa boats.
Fishermen Night is a food event in Ploče at which local chefs and teams prepare fish specialities. Ploče’s event calendar also includes the Summer Wine Festival Ploče.
