The island of Koločep is home to around 17 cultural monuments, primarily small churches and chapels dating from periods up to the 16th century. The Kaštio fortress stands above the port of Donje Čelo. Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment may consider Koločep as a destination.
Culture
The parish church of Saint Mary dates from the 13th to the 15th century and preserves sculptures from the 14th and 16th centuries. The medieval Church of Saint Anthony the Abbot contains a polyptych by Ivan Ugrinović from 1434. The pre-Romanesque Church of Saint Anthony of Padua is located halfway up the slope in Gornje Čelo and dates from the 11th to the 12th century.
Next to the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Donje Čelo, a parish collection displays a reconstructed altar screen from the 11th century from Saint Michael’s Church, a 15th-century polyptych, and material on seven researched churches and archaeological sites on Koločep. The Church of the Holy Trinity is listed among the historic churches of Koločep.
Many buildings on Koločep date from the 15th and 16th centuries and feature finely cut masonry and architectural details. The residential buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries include associated outbuildings such as small mills. The inhabitants of Koločep were known for coral harvesting from the 14th to the 18th century.
In Donje Čelo, remains of defensive towers built after the island was ravaged by the Turks in the 16th century have also been preserved.
Getting Around
A footpath through the interior of the island connects Donje Čelo and Gornje Čelo. In addition, Koločep has an extensive network of footpaths; there is no car traffic anywhere on the island.
Koločep offers secluded beaches that are suitable for a peaceful seaside holiday. The island’s Mediterranean agriculture includes olives, grapevines, figs, carob and citrus fruits.
