Archaeology and city history
The Vučedol archaeological site is in Vukovar-Srijem County, four kilometres downstream from Vukovar. The Vučedol Culture Museum is located at an archaeological site on the banks of the Danube. It conveys the site's historical and archaeological significance through a contemporary interpretation. Those interested in early history will find a different perspective here than in the region's city museums.
In Vukovar, Eltz Castle houses the City Museum. The birthplace of chemist and Nobel laureate Lavoslav Ružička also offers visitors an encounter with him through a hologram. The water tower offers views of Vukovar and the Danube. The Vukovarsko nokturno thematic route links memorial sites in Vukovar commemorating the Croatian War of Independence. For your visit, each offers a distinct historical and cultural focus: the museum, city views and memorial sites.
In Vinkovci, the City Museum is housed in a Baroque architectural monument; there, you can meet Ban Josip Šokčević through a hologram. The Sopot archaeological park and excursion site includes six Sopot houses and is connected to the centre of Vinkovci by a three-kilometre walking and cycling path. In Županja, the Stjepan Gruber Local History Museum is housed in a 19th-century border guardhouse, the only surviving example of Military Frontier architecture in Croatia.
Ilok: wine cellars and wine route
In Ilok, almost all the wineries on the Iločka vinska ruta wine route are concentrated in the town of Ilok. You can explore the route on foot or by taking the Iločki podrumi tourist train. At the Old Cellars beside Odescalchi Castle, hosts guide visitors through parts of the cellar complex and organise wine tastings. Odescalchi Castle is also home to the Ilok City Museum and the municipal gallery. A trip to Ilok brings wine, cellar culture and museum visits together. If you want to focus on these experiences, Ilok may be a natural starting point when choosing where to stay.
Trails, water and nature watching
The Nijemci Birdwatching Centre extends across several locations, including the Arboretum Park and the Sopotac excursion site. There are birdwatching towers, as well as binoculars, telescopes and identification guides. The Virovi educational trail is 2,727 metres long. On the Bosut River, the Sveta Katarina boat travels from Arboretum Park to the Sopotac excursion site. These activities give you different options for watching nature or exploring a trail on foot.
For cycling trips, the Srijem cycling route connects the southern and north-eastern parts of Vukovar-Srijem County; it links up with EuroVelo 6, the so-called Danube Route. Near the Vukovo and Principovac viewpoints, two circular hiking trails pass through vineyards, over Liska, the highest point at 297 metres, and via Skandala back to the starting point. The longer trail is 14 kilometres and the shorter one nine kilometres. There is also a 22-kilometre trail from Bapska to Principovac. The stated distances can help you choose a route based on the distance you want to cover; no walking time or difficulty level is specified.
Other excursion destinations offer their own highlights: the Poloji excursion site has a sandy beach, sports facilities and children's playgrounds. Visitors can travel in eco-vehicles through the Kunjevci forest area and look out for roe deer, fallow deer or red deer. In Vukovar, Adica Forest Park is recommended for nature experiences and active recreation; Vukovarska Ada is a recreational area used in summer.
In Županja, the riverside promenade along the Sava embankment runs from the sugar factory to the border guardhouse. The Bošnjaci Forestry Museum presents the flora and fauna of the Spačva Basin and the tradition of organised forestry through exhibits and historical tools. Alongside wine and city history, regional nature and forestry are therefore also options to consider when planning your trip.
