Maja: Holiday Apartments and Houses

Maja is shaped by a long religious history. The name Maja is first documented in 1213, and the parish in 1327. The present-day Church of Saint Elijah was consecrated in Svračica in 1830, in the valley on the left bank of the Maja stream.

Culture

The parish of Maja was re-established in 1698 and dedicated to the Prophet Elijah after the destruction of the former Church of Our Lady. As early as 1713, a wooden Church of Saint Elijah was built on the hill where the former church had stood.

Following its post-war restoration, the Church of Saint Elijah in Maja combines old and new elements. A solemn Mass and the blessing of the restored church took place on June 30, 2024. The parish’s most important patronal feast is celebrated on July 20 and is dedicated to Saint Elijah the Prophet.

Landscape

The Maja River flows through the settlement of Maja and nearby Svračica. The areas surrounding Maja include Vis, Vratnik, Vješala, and Glavica. The wider regional area includes Zminjak and Grad Pedalj.

The Maja is a right-bank tributary of the Glina and is 32.6 kilometers long. It rises at the foot of Zrinska gora near Brezovo Polje and flows into the Glina at Prekopa, about four kilometers north of Glina.
