Landscape

Veliki Alan is a significant mountain pass in the Velebit range at an elevation of 1,414 metres. The road across Veliki Alan, which runs through the Velebit range, connects Lika with the sea.

Hiking

Alan is a starting point for hiking tours in the Velebit range. The 1,612-metre-high summit of Alančić is approximately one hour away from Planinarska kuća Alan in a northerly direction via the Premužićeva staza. Alančić is a grassy summit offering views across large parts of the northern and central Velebit range as well as the sea.

A ridge trail leads from Planinarska kuća Alan to the 1,451-metre-high summit of Buljma. The Buljma tour offers views of the sea and the Mirovo valley, takes approximately 1.5 hours on foot, and has no major ascents. The Veliki Golić–Goljak circular trail runs mainly through grassland and has no difficult climbs.

Zečjak is the second-highest summit of the central Velebit range. The ascent from Alan initially follows the road towards Štirovača and then the Premužićeva staza before climbing to the summit. To reach Veliki Lubenovac, the trail from Alan initially follows the Premužićeva staza northwards and then turns onto a mountain path at the Krajačev kuk junction.

Culture and Nature

Since 2009, the Premužićeva staza has been officially protected as cultural heritage of national significance. In the vicinity of Alan, the remains of stone houses, barns, dry-stone walls, and cisterns have been preserved in Mirovo. Mirovo was formerly a seasonal mountain settlement and is now a Velebit grassland landscape with visible dry-stone walls and old summer houses.

At the „Planinska igraonica“ education and interpretation centre in Alan, visitors can learn about the species and habitats of Northern Velebit National Park as well as traditional shepherd life. Planinarska kuća Alan is considered to be continuously open from the end of May to the end of October; outside this season, it is usually open on Sundays.

Cycling Routes

The Alan–Štirovača cycling route is 11.9 kilometres long, rated as being of medium difficulty, and listed with a travel time of 1 to 1.25 hours. The Alan–Mrkvište–Štirovača cycle path runs eastwards from Planinarska kuća Alan, shares 2 kilometres with Trail E, and descends 3 kilometres from Mrkvište to Štirovača.

Trail E Oltari–Zavižan–Lom–Lubenovac–Alan reaches Alan via a gravel road through Lubenovac after passing Zavižan and Mali Lom.

Routes and Surroundings

Alan can be reached via a paved road from Jablanac or via a gravel road from Begovača. In the surrounding area, Štirovača can be reached from Alan via 9 kilometres of gravel road to Mrkvište, followed by 3.5 kilometres of paved road into the valley.
