Culture and History

The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gospić was built in 1783 and is considered a rare example of sacred architecture for a settlement in the Military Frontier in Lika. The Murković Mill is an old water mill on the Novčica in Gospić.

The Lika Gospić Museum is housed in a cultural monument dating from the late 18th century. During the Military Frontier period, this building served as the office and residence of the commanding general of the Lika Regiment. The permanent Terra Viva archaeological exhibition covers Lika from prehistoric times to the end of the Middle Ages. There is also a permanent ethnographic exhibition in a traditional Lika log cabin in the museum courtyard.

Nikola Tesla Square is home to a bronze monument to Nikola Tesla, the first identical monument of its kind in Croatia. The 19th-century Water Woman Marta sculpture is located in the centre of Gospić and is considered a symbol of the town. Nearby, in Smiljan, is the Nikola Tesla Memorial Center, which opened on 10 July 2006 after Tesla's birth house had been reconstructed and connected with a new museum exhibition, surrounding monuments and new buildings.

Activities and Trails

Likos adrenaline park is located 500 metres from the centre of Gospić. Its offerings include zip-lining, paintball, an artificial climbing wall, gel blaster, human foosball, archery and kayaking.

Terezijana is an educational trail along an old Austro-Hungarian road built in 1786 to connect Gospić with Karlobag. The educational trail runs for 3 kilometres from Baške Oštarije to a viewpoint above Konjsko.

The cycling routes in the Gospić area are named Velikana I and II, Jezero, Štirovača, Brušane, Rizvanuša, Velebit, Jadovno, Plitvice and Ljubovo. Cycling options mentioned include e-bikes, road bikes and mountain bikes. Sport fishing in the Gospić area dates back to the founding of the Sport Fishing Association Lika in 1927.

Nature and Landscape

Jasikovac is considered a mixed forest ecosystem characterised by a bird community. At the same time, Jasikovac is a cultivated forest planted more than 270 years ago. The upper headwater sections of the streams in the Gospić area provide a habitat for the endemic Lika pijor, also called Lika pijur.

Cuisine

The traditional cuisine of Lika is described as including, among other things, squeaky cheese, Basa, smoked bacon or prosciutto, lamb dishes, sauerkraut with ribs and sausages, mushroom noodles, game dishes and homemade pastries.
