Culture and History

Cesargrad is a medieval fortress built in the mid-14th century on Cesarska gora above the Sutla Valley and the present-day town of Klanjec. The complex consisting of the Franciscan monastery and the Church of the Annunciation in Klanjec was built between 1630 and 1686 by Nikola and Sigismund Erdody. Two restored sarcophagi belonging to the Erdody family are on display in the Franciscan monastery.

The Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of Croatia’s earliest early Baroque religious monuments and serves as the mausoleum of the Erdödy family. The Antun Augustincic Gallery in Klanjec is a sculpture museum that preserves and exhibits works by Antun Augustincic. The Spomen-park znamenitih Klanjčana is a memorial park on the former cemetery of Klanjec; the graves of Antun Mihanović, Oton Iveković and Krsto Iveković are preserved there.

Nearby, five kilometres south of Klanjec, lies Novi Dvori Cesargradski. The complex was built by Toma Erdody in 1603.

Wine

Sokol is an indigenous Muscat grape variety that grows on the slopes of Cesarska gora near Klanjec. Sokol wine can be tasted at two wineries in Klanjec.

Visiting

The Franciscan monastery and the Church of the Annunciation in Klanjec are open to visitors by prior arrangement with the Klanjec Cultural Centre. The Chapel of Saint Florian can be reached via a forest promenade. A Calvary stands on the hill next to the chapel.
