HE Ozalj 1 is a protected cultural asset and was entered into the Croatian Register of Cultural Assets in 2007. The facility has been generating electricity in the original building since 1908; its powerhouse is a neo-Romantic example of early 20th-century industrial architecture.

Anyone planning a stay in Ozalj may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Culture and History

The Zavičajni Muzej Ozalj has a dedicated section on the painter Slava Raškaj. The museum is located in Old Town Ozalj and presents 6,000 years of history through written records and archaeological artefacts.

The Zavičajni Muzej Ozalj also includes Etno Park Ozalj, an open-air museum featuring traditional architecture and objects from everyday life in the pre-industrial era. The park includes residential and farm buildings, as well as the interiors of rural living rooms, kitchens and pantries with authentic furnishings.

Old Town Ozalj is particularly known for the Zrinski Palace, a monumental 16th-century building constructed on a steep rock. The palace preserves wall frescoes, incised Glagolitic inscriptions and a wooden shingle roof. Stari grad Ozalj stands on a high rock above the Kupa River and preserves a history dating back to the 6th century.

Munjara is a hydropower plant on the Kupa in Ozalj with a castle-like appearance, and it continues to generate electricity. The detour of the cycling route to Ozalj leads to the Baroque parish church of St Vitus, first mentioned in 1349.

Hiking, Fishing and Water

The Dubovački Hiking Trail begins in Ozalj and crosses the foothills between Karlovac and Ozalj via Vodenica and Sveti Križ to Karlovac. The 28-kilometre route connects the old towns of Ozalj and Dubovac and is described as a one-day hike through old villages with preserved traditional architecture.

ŠRD Ozalj organises fishing competitions, including the international Kup grada Ozlja, league rounds, a county cup and other club competitions. Fishing waters associated with ŠRD Ozalj include the Kupa, the Dobra, nine Šljunčare lakes, as well as the Kamenica and Ribnički streams.

The Kup Grada Ozlja is a recurring float-fishing competition held at the Šljunčare lakes. A bathing area is located on the banks of the Kupa near Munjara, where visitors can swim.

Location and Surroundings

A railway tunnel runs beneath the foundations of Old Town Ozalj on the banks of the Kupa. Nearby is Vrlovka Kamanje Cave, located 6.5 km from Ozalj. The surrounding area is associated with the wine cellars of Vivodina.
