Karlovac combines river landscapes with fortress and urban history. Those planning a stay in Karlovac may wish to rent a holiday apartment.

Geographical Location

The Kupa and Korana rivers are located in the city centre. A car or bicycle is required for a short visit to the Mrežnica and Dobra rivers, which are further outside the city.

Passenger trains stop at Karlovac Centar railway station in the city centre, opposite Karlovac bus station. The bus station is also located in the city centre, a five-minute walk from the historic Star district.

Culture

Zvijezda is Karlovac's oldest district. The neighbourhood is bounded by defensive ditches and preserves the remains of a stone wall. A museum exhibition is housed in the Branič Tower of Stari grad Dubovac.

Kino Edison is a cultural and historical monument of Karlovac, was built in 1920 and is one of Croatia's oldest purpose-built cinemas. Kino Edison is also considered Croatia's first VR cinema and screens educational VR content as well as documentaries.

The Church of the Holy Trinity is considered a monument of national significance. The Franciscan monastery and the Church of the Holy Trinity form a historical and cultural complex that has been administered by Franciscans since the 17th century. The monastery's Museum of Sacred Heritage houses 10,000 rare books and objects of sacred art.

The Karlovac–Turanj Homeland War Museum is housed in a former Austrian barracks in the Turanj district.

Nature and Trails

Vrbanićev Park has been open to the public since 1896 and was designed as a small open-air botanical garden.

A historic walking route connects Dubovac Castle, the fortified old town of Star, 19th-century parks and Aquatika. It runs along a tree-shaded promenade and the banks of the Kupa before continuing through the old town centre and the Vrbanić Gardens.

The Kupa Promenade is approximately ten kilometres long; the easy walk takes around two hours. It is marked with hiking symbols and directional signs. Two national cycling tourism routes also pass through Karlovac.

Water and Discoveries

Aquatika presents the flora and fauna of Croatian rivers and lakes, their geological history, traditional culture, and the history of Karlovac's four river basins. The pool complex follows the course of a typical karst river, allowing visitors to experience a river from its source to its mouth.

Foginovo is described as Croatia's first registered river bathing site.

Local Cuisine

Visitors can try seasonal themed dishes at local restaurants, including fish, beer-based dishes, strawberries, mushrooms and chestnuts.
